The new St Luke's CE Primary school is a flagship project to create a radical new primary school at the heart Blakenhall Gardens regeneration area of Wolverhampton. Wolverhampton City Council and All Saints and Blakenhall Community Development (ABCD) have been working together as part of a New Deal funding programme to facilitate the process of regenerating this inner city area. St Luke's CE Primary School is a 2 form entry Primary School (420 places) with a 30 place Nursery. The School currently operates on a split site and the project is to create a new Primary school on a single site in the heart of Blakenhall, with shared community facilities and extended use. Key features of the brief include:
• a landmark scheme, fully inclusive, with community facilities and extended use across all ages
• access to high quality education, learning and recreational experiences for the community and all pupils
• a stimulating, safe and secure environment
• welcoming to all those involved in the life of the facility
• flexibility to adapt to future changing circumstances
• an environment which facilitates individual learning and use of a range of teaching methods
Architype is undertaking extensive consultation involving children, teaching and support staff, governors, parents and the wider community. The scheme has developed in response to this consultation to create dynamic open plan multipurpose activity areas from which classrooms are accessed, expressing the ethos of the school by creating a sense of a social community and heart to the school. The school is required to achieve BREEAM Excellent, and particular attention is being given to achieving high levels of natural light, controlled natural ventilation and a healthy internal environment.
