Architype were appointed to carry out a feasibility study for environmentally sustainable improvements and refurbishment works to five blocks of flats forming the Meadows Estate. The brief was to achieve energy efficient dwellings compliant with Decent Homes standards, and any works had to be undertaken with the residents in occupation. In addition to the Decent Homes standards, improvements included:

• External wall insulation to Low Heat standards

• New windows

• New mono-pitched roofs

• Condensing boilers

• Screening to deck access

• Wind turbines for communal lighting

• Level access to all flats

• Improved acoustic insulation

The costed proposals were successfully presented to the Council’s Environment Committee and were recommended for implementation in 2004-2005.
