The project is to create a single conjoined facility which brings together a special school, a primary school, and community facilities into a single shared building and campus. Green Park Special School accommodates 100 pupils with physical, behavioural, intellectual and sensory needs and an age range of 4 to 19. Improved provision is required for these pupils who have profound and complex needs and to enhance professional development for staff, to enable training for parents and carers, to enhance life skills of pupils and to share curriculum enriching activities.
Stowlawn School is a one form entry primary school which currently operates in two adjacent buildings. The physical separation cuts into staff time and is a barrier to the high achievement for this Creative Partners School which delivers the curriculum in an enhanced way. The school is also part of a mini EIC Education Action Zone.
The site is situated in an area of high deprivation and suffers from high levels of theft and vandalism. The combined site has huge potential but needs creative development to ensure flexibility to address the needs of all of the users. The need for outdoor teaching facilities is a priority as there is a lack of quality play facilities for all of the children.
Architype is running an extensive consultation process designed to engage everyone involved in both schools and the community centre in shaping the vision for the new facilities. This philosophy extends into the landscape where we are seeking to transform a flat featureless site into a dynamic environment for learning, socialising and play.
