This scheme brings into use a steeply sloping derelict site on the outskirts of Brighton with the construction of 9 self-build houses. Designed in consultation with the self-builders, the houses utilise the natural advantages of the site; split levels and south facing frontages. The houses are designed to limit energy consumption and pollution using:

• Gas condensing boilers and thermal heat stores

• Passive solar conservatories

• Super-insulated shells incorporating recycled newspaper insulation

The houses achieve high National Home Energy Ratings of 9.8 out of 10, with heating costs below £50 per year.

The scheme was the first in the UK with grass roofs, and was awarded the 1997 DOE/RIBA/NHBC Housing Design Award.
