Architype were commissioned to undertake this complex refurbishment and extension of Southwark Coroner’s Court following a limited entry design competition organised by the London Borough of Southwark.

The original 1900 court, extended in the 1950s, often appeared as a backdrop to television news items and press photographs. Despite its importance, the existing building was introverted and lacked adequate facilities for staff and users.

The removal of the mortuary buildings provided the opportunity to form:

• A new public entrance and circulation core linking the existing offices, original courthouse and cottage

• A new paved and planted courtyard

• A new construction primarily of timber and using sustainable materials of low embodied energy
