Architype were appointed by Slough Borough Council to design a new infant school and nursery, replacing the existing substandard accommodation. The new buildings were constructed on the same site as the existing facility, and were intended to be a thought-provoking teaching resource for the children that addressed environmental issues. Key features included:

• A prefabricated system of timber panels incorporating recycled newspaper insulation

• The provision of covered outdoor areas

• A new welcoming yet secure entrance

• A series of open courtyards throughout the buildings

• Carefully positioned windows for both adults and children to benefit from the view

• Two new halls which have been designed to accommodate after school community activities, and have a folding acoustic screen which can be opened to allow for whole school events

In addition to the dedicated nursery and nine infant classrooms, a nurture unit is included for pupils with special needs.
