Architype were appointed to carry out an options appraisal for the sustainable refurbishment of two eleven storey tower blocks in Langley. Improvement works had to be carried out with residents in occupation. A questionnaire and open day generated a higher level of participation than anticipated and comments were instrumental in formulating the brief. In addition to compliance with the ‘Decent Homes’ standards, improvements included:

• External wall insulation and enclosure of balconies

• New high performance windows and new kitchens and bathrooms

• New rising services and condensing boilers

• Improved acoustic insulation

• New lifts and refuse chutes

• Safer communal access

• External works and landscaping
