Welsch grown Brettstapel being manufactured

Construction at Burry Port Community School is now well underway, with the timber frame for the Key Stage 2 block commencing on site.

The School Extension will be the first Passivhaus School Building in Wales, and Architype’s 5th Passivhaus School. It is also Architype’s second Brettstapel building using UK timber, following the success of Coed-Y-Brenin Visitor Centre.

The timber for the Brettstapel has been sourced largely from Welsh woodland, comprising of 90% Sikta Spruce and 10% Douglas Fir, with Beech specified for the hardwood dowels.

Processed at Pontrillas Sawmill on the Welsh border (and local to Architype’s Hereford Office), the timber is now being fabricated into Brettstapel panels by timber specialists Cedarlan.

The Brettstapel will finally be showcased in the ‘Pod’ building, an elliptical break out space that sits separate from the learning blocks and designed for social and performing arts activities.

Keep up to date with more progress on site by following  the Archiblog!
