High-rise blocks are currently the centre of much debate and often the solution has been to demolish them. However, in the last few years there has been growing recognition of the value of refurbishment - in terms of whole life costs and benefits, environmental impact, and the need to provide homes.

In this context the Department of Trade and Industry is funding a collaborative research project to promote sustainable solutions for high-rise refurbishment. An interactive website: www.sustainingtowers.org has been launched which provides tailor made solutions and advice for building owners and developers on how refurbishment can be a sustainable choice socially, economically and environmentally.

Issues covered include:

• improving building defects and thermal comfort

• security

• energy efficiency and renewable energy

• selecting materials with a low environmental impact
