Architype worked with Sanford Housing Co-operative in New Cross, South East London, on this innovative low-energy project to refurbish and upgrade 14 houses and 6 flats built in the early 1970s. Architype took this scheme up to the planning stage. Partly funded by the Energy Savings Trust's Innovation Programme, the project aims to achieve reductions in CO2 by a minimum of 60%, using a combination of behavioural, energy efficiency, and renewable energy measures.
Renewable energy measures include:
• A biomass district heating system to whole site
• Solar water heating system on each house
• A 40m2 PV array on the roof of the flats
• Micro wind turbine to each house
• A 6Kw wind turbine
The project also includes a new-build recreational building for tenants, made from recycled and renewable materials, in addition to a whole site landscaping strategy incorporating an urban allotment, a composting and recycling centre and new cycle storage.
